2 Samuel, Chapter 13

שמואל ב יג

Amnon, David’s firstborn, tricks his half-sister Tamar into his room and rapes her, then throws her out. David is angry and does nothing. Two years later Avshalom, her brother, has Amnon killed at a sheepshearing feast and flees to his grandfather in Geshur for three years.

13:1And it came to pass after this, that Avshalom (Absalom) the son of David had a fair sister, whose name was Tamar; and Amnon the son of David loved her.

Vayehi aḥarei-ḥen ule'Avshalom ben-David aḥot yafah ushemah Tamar vaye'ehaveha Amnon ben-David.

13:2And Amnon was so distressed, that he fell sick for his sister Tamar; for she was a virgin; and it seemed hard to Amnon to do anything to her.

Vayetzer le'Amnon lehitḥalot ba'avur Tamar aḥoto ki vetulah hi vayipale be'einei Amnon la'asot lah me'umah.

13:3But Amnon had a friend, whose name was Yonadav (Jonadab), the son of Shim’ah (Shimeah) David’s brother; and Yonadav was a very subtle man.

Ule'Amnon rea ushemo Yonadav ben-Shim'ah aḥi David veYonadav ish ḥaḥam me'od.

13:4And he said unto him, “Why are you, being the king’s son, so lean from day to day? Will you not tell me?” And Amnon said unto him, “I love Tamar, my brother Avshalom’s sister.”

Vayomer lo madua atah kaḥah dal ben-hameleḥ baboker baboker halo tagid li vayomer lo Amnon et-Tamar aḥot Avshalom aḥi ani ohev.

13:5And Yonadav said unto him, “Lie down on your bed, and pretend to be sick; and when your father comes to see you, say unto him, ‘I pray you, let my sister Tamar come, and give me food, and prepare the food in my sight, that I may see it, and eat it at her hand.’”

13:6So Amnon lay down, and pretended to be sick; and when the king had come to see him, Amnon said unto the king, “I pray you, let Tamar my sister come, and make me a couple of cakes in my sight, that I may eat at her hand.”

13:7Then David sent home to Tamar, saying, “Go now to your brother Amnon’s house, and prepare him food.”

The sheepshearing

13:23And it came to pass after two full years, that Avshalom had sheepshearers in Ba’al Chatzor (Baal-hazor), which is beside Efrayim (Ephraim); and Avshalom invited all the king’s sons.

Sources & method

Hebrew text
The Masoretic text with vowels (nikkud) and cantillation marks (ta’amim), as published on Chabad.org. Every verse was checked character by character against Chabad’s Tenakh. Where the written text (ketiv) differs from the reading (qere), the reading is shown and the written form follows in small type.
English translation
The King James Version (public domain), lightly modernized by Benei Avraham: “thee/thou/ye” become “you,” older verb forms are updated (“hath” to “has”), and archaic words are replaced only where the meaning would otherwise be unclear. People and places carry their Hebrew names, with the familiar English name in parentheses the first time on each page (e.g., Shaul (Saul)). The Divine Name (יהוה, “the LORD” in the KJV) is written “Hashem”; “God” (Elohim) is unchanged. Verse numbers follow the Hebrew Bible.
Transliteration
Produced from the Hebrew with the open-source hebrew-transliteration library, adapted to Sephardic/Israeli pronunciation and reviewed by hand: ḥ for Chet and Chaf, tz for Tzadi, k for Kuf, and the Divine Name read “Adonai.” Names are capitalized.
Commentary
Written for our Wednesday Tenakh study from a Messianic Jewish perspective, in line with the Benei Avraham Statement of Faith. It reads the passage first in its Torah setting, then with the Sages, and then with the witness of the Brit Hadashah. Its sources include the Talmud and Midrash, Rashi, Radak, Metzudat David, Rambam, the First Fruits of Zion End of Days lessons, and teachings of Rabbi Efraim Palvanov and Ariel Cohen Alloro. Numerical readings (gematria) are offered as hints, not proofs. It is shown by default; tap Commentary to hide it.
