2 Samuel, Chapter 18

שמואל ב יח

David divides his army under Yo’av, Avishai and Ittai, and the people keep him in the city. He charges the captains, “Deal gently for my sake with the young man.” In the forest of Efrayim, Avshalom’s head is caught in a terebinth; Yo’av thrusts three darts into his heart, and he is buried under a heap of stones. Two runners bring the news, and the king asks each one the same question: “Is it well with the young man, with Avshalom?”

18:1And David numbered the people who were with him, and set captains of thousands and captains of hundreds over them.

Vayifkod David et-ha'am asher ito vayasem aleihem sarei alafim vesarei me'ot.

18:2And David sent forth a third of the people under the hand of Yo’av (Joab), and a third under the hand of Avishai (Abishai) the son of Tzeruyah (Zeruiah), Yo’av’s brother, and a third under the hand of Ittai the Gitti (Gittite). And the king said unto the people, “I will surely go forth with you myself also.”

Vayeshalaḥ David et-ha'am hashelishit beyad-Yo'av vehashelishit beyad Avishai ben-Tzeruyah aḥi Yo'av vehashelishit beyad Itai haGiti vayomer hameleḥ el-ha'am yatzo etze gam-ani imaḥem.

18:3But the people answered, “You shall not go forth; for if we flee away, they will not care about us; neither if half of us die, will they care about us; but now you are worth ten thousand of us; therefore now it is better that you be ready to help us from the city.”

Vayomer ha'am lo tetze ki im-nos nanus lo-yasimu eleinu lev ve'im-yamutu ḥetzyenu lo-yasimu eleinu lev ki-atah ḥamonu asarah alafim ve'atah tov ki-tihyeh-lanu me'ir la'zor.

18:4And the king said unto them, “What seems best to you I will do.” And the king stood beside the gate, and all the people came out by hundreds and by thousands.

18:5And the king commanded Yo’av and Avishai and Ittai, saying, “Deal gently for my sake with the young man, with Avshalom (Absalom).” And all the people heard when the king gave all the captains charge concerning Avshalom.

The forest of Efrayim

18:6So the people went out into the field against Israel; and the battle was in the forest of Efrayim (Ephraim);

18:9And Avshalom happened upon the servants of David. And Avshalom was riding upon a mule, and the mule went under the thick boughs of a great terebinth, and his head caught fast in the terebinth, and he was left hanging between heaven and earth; and the mule that was under him went on.

18:19Then said Achima’atz (Ahimaaz) the son of Tzadok (Zadok), “Let me now run, and bear the king tidings, how Hashem has vindicated him from the hand of his enemies.”

Sources & method

Hebrew text
The Masoretic text with vowels (nikkud) and cantillation marks (ta’amim), as published on Chabad.org. Every verse was checked character by character against Chabad’s Tenakh. Where the written text (ketiv) differs from the reading (qere), the reading is shown and the written form follows in small type.
English translation
The King James Version (public domain), lightly modernized by Benei Avraham: “thee/thou/ye” become “you,” older verb forms are updated (“hath” to “has”), and archaic words are replaced only where the meaning would otherwise be unclear. People and places carry their Hebrew names, with the familiar English name in parentheses the first time on each page (e.g., Shaul (Saul)). The Divine Name (יהוה, “the LORD” in the KJV) is written “Hashem”; “God” (Elohim) is unchanged. Verse numbers follow the Hebrew Bible.
Transliteration
Produced from the Hebrew with the open-source hebrew-transliteration library, adapted to Sephardic/Israeli pronunciation and reviewed by hand: ḥ for Chet and Chaf, tz for Tzadi, k for Kuf, and the Divine Name read “Adonai.” Names are capitalized.
Commentary
Written for our Wednesday Tenakh study from a Messianic Jewish perspective, in line with the Benei Avraham Statement of Faith. It reads the passage first in its Torah setting, then with the Sages, and then with the witness of the Brit Hadashah.
