Tenakh Study · 2 Samuel 21:1–22

2 Samuel, Chapter 21

שמואל ב כא

A three-year famine is traced to Shaul’s blood-guilt toward the Giv’onim. David spares Mefiboshet for Yehonatan’s oath and hands over seven of Shaul’s sons; Ritzpah guards their bodies from harvest until the rains, and David buries Shaul and Yehonatan in the tomb of Kish. In the last Philistine wars four sons of the giant fall, and David’s men vow not to let him quench “the lamp of Israel.”

21:1Then there was a famine in the days of David three years, year after year; and David sought the face of Hashem. And Hashem said, “It is for Shaul (Saul), and for his bloody house, because he put to death the Giv’onim (Gibeonites).”

Vayehi ra'av bimei David shalosh shanim shanah aḥarei shanah vayevakesh David et-penei Adonai vayomer Adonai el-Sha'ul ve'el-beit hadamim al-asher-hemit et-haGiv'onim.

21:2And the king called the Giv’onim, and said unto them (now the Giv’onim were not of the children of Israel, but of the remnant of the Emori (Amorites); and the children of Israel had sworn unto them; and Shaul sought to strike them down in his zeal for the children of Israel and Yehudah (Judah));

21:3and David said unto the Giv’onim, “What shall I do for you? And with what shall I make atonement, that you may bless the inheritance of Hashem?”

21:4And the Giv’onim said unto him, “It is no matter of silver or gold between us and Shaul or his house; neither is it for us to put any man to death in Israel.” And he said, “Whatever you say, that will I do for you.”

Spared for an oath

21:7But the king spared Mefiboshet (Mephibosheth), the son of Yehonatan (Jonathan) the son of Shaul, because of the oath of Hashem that was between them, between David and Yehonatan the son of Shaul.

21:8But the king took the two sons of Ritzpah (Rizpah) the daughter of Ayah (Aiah), whom she bore unto Shaul, Armoni and Mefiboshet; and the five sons of Michal the daughter of Shaul, whom she brought up for Adriel the son of Barzillai the Mecholati (Meholathite);

Ritzpah’s vigil

21:10And Ritzpah the daughter of Ayah took sackcloth, and spread it for herself upon the rock, from the beginning of harvest until water poured down upon them from heaven, and allowed neither the birds of the heavens to rest on them by day, nor the beasts of the field by night.

The sons of the giant

21:15And the Pelishtim had war again with Israel; and David went down, and his servants with him, and fought against the Pelishtim; and David grew faint.

21:17But Avishai (Abishai) the son of Tzeruyah (Zeruiah) helped him, and struck the Pelishti (Philistine), and killed him. Then the men of David swore unto him, saying, “You shall go out no more with us to battle, that you not quench the lamp of Israel.”

Sources & method

Hebrew text
The Masoretic text with vowels (nikkud) and cantillation marks (ta’amim), as published on Chabad.org. Every verse was checked character by character against Chabad’s Tenakh. Where the written text (ketiv) differs from the reading (qere), the reading is shown and the written form follows in small type.
English translation
The King James Version (public domain), lightly modernized by Benei Avraham: “thee/thou/ye” become “you,” older verb forms are updated (“hath” to “has”), and archaic words are replaced only where the meaning would otherwise be unclear. People and places carry their Hebrew names, with the familiar English name in parentheses the first time on each page (e.g., Shaul (Saul)). The Divine Name (יהוה, “the LORD” in the KJV) is written “Hashem”; “God” (Elohim) is unchanged. Verse numbers follow the Hebrew Bible.
Transliteration
Produced from the Hebrew with the open-source hebrew-transliteration library, adapted to Sephardic/Israeli pronunciation and reviewed by hand: ḥ for Chet and Chaf, tz for Tzadi, k for Kuf, and the Divine Name read “Adonai.” Names are capitalized.
Commentary
Written for our Wednesday Tenakh study from a Messianic Jewish perspective, in line with the Benei Avraham Statement of Faith. It reads the passage first in its Torah setting, then with the Sages, and then with the witness of the Brit Hadashah. Its sources include the Talmud and Midrash, Rashi, Radak, Metzudat David, Rambam, the First Fruits of Zion End of Days lessons, and teachings of Rabbi Efraim Palvanov and Ariel Cohen Alloro. Numerical readings (gematria) are offered as hints, not proofs. It is shown by default; tap Commentary to hide it.
