Haftarah
Ashkenazi communities, Chabad among them, read Isaiah 27:6–28:13 and then skip to 29:22–23. Sephardic communities read Jeremiah 1:1–2:3. Shemot opens with “those who came into Mitzrayim with Yaakov” (haba’im, Exodus 1:1); the haftarah opens with the same word: “those that come of Yaakov” shall take root and Yisrael shall blossom (27:6), and the outcasts in the land of Mitzrayim shall come at the sound of the great shofar (27:13).
27:6He shall cause those that come of Yaakov to take root; Yisrael shall blossom and bud, and fill the face of the world with fruit.

Haftarah: Sephardic Custom
Read by Sephardic communities instead of Isaiah. Hashem calls Yirmeyahu, who answers “I cannot speak; for I am a child” (1:6), as Moshe answered “I am not eloquent” (Exodus 4:10); and to each He says that He will put His words in his mouth (1:9, Exodus 4:12).

Sources & method
- Hebrew text
- The Masoretic text with vowels (nikkud) and cantillation marks (ta’amim), as published on Chabad.org. Every verse was checked character by character against Chabad’s Tanakh. Where the written text (ketiv) differs from the reading (qere), the reading is shown and the written form follows in small type.
- English translation
- The King James Version (public domain), lightly modernized by Benei Avraham: “thee/thou/ye” become “you,” older verb forms are updated (“hath” to “has,” “begat” to “begot”), and archaic words are replaced only where the meaning would otherwise be unclear. People and places carry their Hebrew names, with the familiar English name in parentheses the first time (e.g., Moshe (Moses)). The Divine Name (יהוה, “the LORD” in the KJV) is written “Hashem”; “God” (Elohim) is unchanged. Verse numbers follow the Hebrew Bible.
- Transliteration
- Produced from the Hebrew with the open-source hebrew-transliteration library, adapted to Sephardic/Israeli pronunciation and reviewed by hand: ḥ for Chet and Chaf, tz for Tzadi, k for Kuf, and the Divine Name read “Adonai.” Names are capitalized.
- Aliyot & haftarot
- Portion divisions and haftarah readings follow the standard Jewish calendar outside Israel, cross-checked with Chabad.org and Hebcal. Ashkenazi and Sephardic haftarah customs are both shown.
- Hebrew font
- SBL Hebrew, by the Society of Biblical Literature.
