Maftir

מפטיר

The Maftir repeats the last verses of the Seventh Portion. On Shabbat Zachor and Shabbat Parah, a second Torah scroll is taken out for a special Maftir. On Shabbat HaGadol the Maftir is this one, and only the haftarah changes.

8:33And you shall not go out of the door of the tabernacle of the congregation in seven days, until the days of your consecration are at an end; for seven days he shall consecrate you.

Haftarah · Jeremiah 7:21–8:3, 9:22–23

Haftarah

הפטרה

Tzav gives the priests the law of each offering. In the haftarah Yirmeyahu (Jeremiah) reminds Yehudah that when Hashem brought their fathers out of Mitzrayim He did not speak to them first about offerings: “Obey My voice, and I will be your God” (7:23). The offerings of a people who will not listen are worthless, and the end is exile. The haftarah skips ahead to close with a word of hope: let a man glory only in this, “that he understands and knows Me” (9:23). Ashkenazi and Sephardic communities read the same verses. In most years Shabbat Tzav is Shabbat HaGadol, when Malachi 3 is read instead; on Shabbat Zachor or Shabbat Parah the special haftarah is read.

7:21Thus says Hashem of hosts, the God of Yisrael: “Put your burnt offerings unto your sacrifices, and eat flesh.

Koh amar Adonai tzeva'ot elohei Yisra'el oloteiḥem sefu al-zivḥeiḥem ve'iḥlu vasar.

HaGadol Haftarah · Malachi 3:4–24

Haftarah: Shabbat HaGadol

הפטרת שבת הגדול

Shabbat HaGadol, “the Great Shabbat”, is the Shabbat before Pesach. In most years it is Shabbat Tzav (in a leap year Tzav usually falls earlier, on Shabbat Parah or Shabbat Zachor, and Shabbat HaGadol is Metzora or Acharei Mot). The Torah reading is unchanged, and this haftarah is read instead of Jeremiah 7. It ends with the promise that gives the day one of its names: “Behold, I will send you Eliyahu the prophet before the coming of the great and dreadful day of Hashem” (3:23). Most communities, Chabad among them, read it every Shabbat HaGadol; some read it only when Shabbat HaGadol falls on the eve of Pesach.

3:4Then shall the offering of Yehudah and Yerushalayim be pleasant unto Hashem, as in the days of old, and as in former years.

Maftir for Shabbat Zachor · Deuteronomy 25:17–19

Maftir: Shabbat Zachor

מפטיר זכור

Shabbat Zachor is the Shabbat before Purim. In most years it is Shabbat Tetzaveh; in a leap year it is usually Vayikra and sometimes Tzav. A second Torah scroll is taken out for this Maftir: the command to remember what Amalek did to Yisrael on the way out of Mitzrayim. Many read the word for “remembrance” in verse 19 twice, as zecher and as zeicher.

25:17Remember what Amalek did unto you by the way, when you came forth out of Mitzrayim;

Zaḥor et asher-asah leḥa Amalek badereḥ betzeteḥem miMitzrayim.

25:18how he met you by the way, and struck the hindmost of you, all that were feeble behind you, when you were faint and weary; and he did not fear God.

25:19Therefore it shall be, when Hashem your God has given you rest from all your enemies round about, in the land which Hashem your God gives you for an inheritance to possess it, that you shall blot out the remembrance of Amalek from under heaven; you shall not forget it.

Zachor Haftarah · 1 Samuel 15:1–34

Haftarah: Shabbat Zachor

הפטרת זכור

Read on Shabbat Zachor instead of Jeremiah 7. Ashkenazi communities, Chabad among them, begin at 1 Samuel 15:2; Sephardic communities begin at 15:1. Shmuel tells Sha’ul to destroy Amalek, but Sha’ul spares Agag the king of Amalek (15:8–9). Haman, the enemy of the Jews in the Purim story, is called “the Agagite” (Esther 3:1).

15:1And Shmuel (Samuel) said unto Sha’ul (Saul), “Hashem sent me to anoint you to be king over His people, over Yisrael; now therefore hearken unto the voice of the words of Hashem.

Vayomer Shemu'el el-Sha'ul oti shalaḥ Adonai limshaḥaḥa lemeleḥ al-amo al-Yisra'el ve'atah shema lekol divrei Adonai.

Ashkenazi communities, Chabad among them, begin here: 1 Samuel 15:2–34

15:2Thus says Hashem of hosts: I remember that which Amalek did to Yisrael, how he laid wait for him in the way, when he came up from Mitzrayim.

Koh amar Adonai tzeva'ot pakadti et asher-asah Amalek leYisra'el asher-sam lo badereḥ ba'aloto miMitzrayim.

15:4And Sha’ul gathered the people together, and numbered them in Tela’im (Telaim), two hundred thousand footmen, and ten thousand men of Yehudah.

15:6And Sha’ul said unto the Keini (Kenites), “Go, depart, get down from among the Amalekites, lest I destroy you with them; for you showed kindness to all the children of Yisrael, when they came up out of Mitzrayim.” So the Keini departed from among the Amalekites.

15:9But Sha’ul and the people spared Agag, and the best of the sheep, and of the oxen, and of the fatlings, and the lambs, and all that was good, and would not utterly destroy them; but everything that was vile and refuse, that they destroyed utterly.

Maftir for Shabbat Parah · Numbers 19:1–22

Maftir: Shabbat Parah

מפטיר פרה

Shabbat Parah is the Shabbat after Purim, read so that Yisrael may purify themselves before Pesach. In a leap year it is often Shabbat Tzav (in other years Ki Tisa or Vayakhel). A second Torah scroll is taken out for this Maftir: the law of the red heifer, whose ashes cleanse from the uncleanness of death.

19:1And Hashem spoke unto Moshe and unto Aharon, saying,

Vayedaber Adonai el-Mosheh ve'el-Aharon lemor.

אוַיְדַבֵּ֣ר יְהֹוָ֔ה אֶל־משֶׁ֥ה וְאֶל־אַֽהֲרֹ֖ן לֵאמֹֽר׃

19:2“This is the ordinance of the law which Hashem has commanded, saying, ‘Speak unto the children of Yisrael, that they bring you a red heifer without spot, wherein is no blemish, and upon which never came yoke;

Zot ḥukat hatorah asher-tzivah Adonai lemor daber el-benei Yisra'el veyikḥu eleḥa farah adumah temimah asher ein-bah mum asher lo-alah aleha ol.

Parah Haftarah · Ezekiel 36:16–38

Haftarah: Shabbat Parah

הפטרת פרה

Read on Shabbat Parah instead of Jeremiah 7. As the water of the red heifer cleanses the unclean, Hashem promises: “Then will I sprinkle clean water upon you, and you shall be clean” (36:25), and “a new heart also will I give you” (36:26). Sephardic communities end at verse 36; Ashkenazi communities, Chabad among them, read to verse 38.

36:16Moreover the word of Hashem came unto me, saying,

Vayehi devar-Adonai elay lemor.

טזוַיְהִ֥י דְבַר־יְהֹוָ֖ה אֵלַ֥י לֵאמֹֽר׃

36:17“Son of man, when the house of Yisrael dwelt in their own land, they defiled it by their own way and by their doings; their way was before Me as the uncleanness of a woman in her impurity.

Sources & method

Hebrew text
The Masoretic text with vowels (nikkud) and cantillation marks (ta’amim), as published on Chabad.org. Every verse was checked character by character against Chabad’s Tanakh. Where the written text (ketiv) differs from the reading (qere), the reading is shown and the written form follows in small type.
English translation
The King James Version (public domain), lightly modernized by Benei Avraham: “thee/thou/ye” become “you,” older verb forms are updated (“hath” to “has,” “begat” to “begot”), and archaic words are replaced only where the meaning would otherwise be unclear. People and places carry their Hebrew names, with the familiar English name in parentheses the first time (e.g., Moshe (Moses)). The Divine Name (יהוה, “the LORD” in the KJV) is written “Hashem”; “God” (Elohim) is unchanged. Verse numbers follow the Hebrew Bible.
Transliteration
Produced from the Hebrew with the open-source hebrew-transliteration library, adapted to Sephardic/Israeli pronunciation and reviewed by hand: ḥ for Chet and Chaf, tz for Tzadi, k for Kuf, and the Divine Name read “Adonai.” Names are capitalized.
Aliyot & haftarot
Portion divisions and haftarah readings follow the standard Jewish calendar outside Israel, cross-checked with Chabad.org and Hebcal. Ashkenazi and Sephardic haftarah customs are both shown.
