Maftir

מפטיר

The Maftir repeats the last verses of the Seventh Portion. Metzora is read on its own only in a leap year; in other years Tazria and Metzora are read together on one Shabbat, the reading runs from Leviticus 12:1 to 15:33, and this Maftir and haftarah are read. On Shabbat HaGadol the Maftir is this one, and only the haftarah changes.

15:31Thus shall you separate the children of Yisrael from their uncleanness, that they die not in their uncleanness, when they defile My tabernacle that is among them.

Haftarah · 2 Kings 7:3–20

Haftarah

הפטרה

Metzora gives the law of the leper’s cleansing and his return to the camp (14:8). In the haftarah four lepers, left outside the gate of besieged Shomron (7:3), are the first to find the camp of Aram deserted, and it is they who bring the starving city “a day of good tidings” (7:9); by morning flour and barley are sold in the gate “according to the word of Hashem” (7:16), as Elisha had foretold. Ashkenazi and Sephardic communities read the same verses. When Metzora is read on its own it is usually Shabbat HaGadol, and Malachi 3 is read instead; when Tazria and Metzora are read together, this haftarah is read.

7:3And there were four leprous men at the entrance of the gate; and they said one to another, “Why do we sit here until we die?

Ve'arba'ah anashim hayu metzora'im petaḥ hasha'ar vayomeru ish el-re'ehu mah anaḥnu yoshevim poh ad-matnu.

7:4If we say, ‘We will enter into the city,’ then the famine is in the city, and we shall die there; and if we sit still here, we die also. Now therefore come, and let us fall unto the host of the Arameans (Syrians); if they save us alive, we shall live; and if they kill us, we shall but die.”

7:5And they rose up in the twilight, to go unto the camp of the Arameans; and when they had come to the uttermost part of the camp of Aram (Syria), behold, there was no man there.

7:6For the Lord had made the host of the Arameans to hear a noise of chariots, and a noise of horses, even the noise of a great host; and they said one to another, “Lo, the king of Yisrael has hired against us the kings of the Chitti (Hittites), and the kings of Mitzrayim (Egypt), to come upon us.”

7:7Therefore they arose and fled in the twilight, and left their tents, and their horses, and their donkeys, even the camp as it was, and fled for their life.

7:8And when these lepers came to the uttermost part of the camp, they went into one tent, and ate and drank, and carried from there silver, and gold, and raiment, and went and hid it; and came again, and entered into another tent, and carried from there also, and went and hid it.

7:9Then they said one to another, “We are not doing right; this day is a day of good tidings, and we hold our peace. If we wait until the morning light, some punishment will come upon us. Now therefore come, that we may go and tell the king’s household.”

HaGadol Haftarah · Malachi 3:4–24

Haftarah: Shabbat HaGadol

הפטרת שבת הגדול

Shabbat HaGadol, “the Great Shabbat”, is the Shabbat before Pesach. In a leap year, when Metzora is read on its own, it is usually Shabbat Metzora (8, 10 or 12 Nisan; occasionally Metzora falls a week earlier and Shabbat HaGadol is Acharei Mot). In other years it is Shabbat Tzav. The Torah reading is unchanged, and this haftarah is read instead of 2 Kings 7. It ends with the promise that gives the day one of its names: “Behold, I will send you Eliyahu the prophet before the coming of the great and dreadful day of Hashem” (3:23). Most communities, Chabad among them, read it every Shabbat HaGadol; some read it only when Shabbat HaGadol falls on the eve of Pesach.

3:4Then shall the offering of Yehudah (Judah) and Yerushalayim (Jerusalem) be pleasant unto Hashem, as in the days of old, and as in former years.

Sources & method

Hebrew text
The Masoretic text with vowels (nikkud) and cantillation marks (ta’amim), as published on Chabad.org. Every verse was checked character by character against Chabad’s Tanakh. Where the written text (ketiv) differs from the reading (qere), the reading is shown and the written form follows in small type.
English translation
The King James Version (public domain), lightly modernized by Benei Avraham: “thee/thou/ye” become “you,” older verb forms are updated (“hath” to “has,” “begat” to “begot”), and archaic words are replaced only where the meaning would otherwise be unclear. People and places carry their Hebrew names, with the familiar English name in parentheses the first time (e.g., Moshe (Moses)). The Divine Name (יהוה, “the LORD” in the KJV) is written “Hashem”; “God” (Elohim) is unchanged. Verse numbers follow the Hebrew Bible.
Transliteration
Produced from the Hebrew with the open-source hebrew-transliteration library, adapted to Sephardic/Israeli pronunciation and reviewed by hand: ḥ for Chet and Chaf, tz for Tzadi, k for Kuf, and the Divine Name read “Adonai.” Names are capitalized.
Aliyot & haftarot
Portion divisions and haftarah readings follow the standard Jewish calendar outside Israel, cross-checked with Chabad.org and Hebcal. Ashkenazi and Sephardic haftarah customs are both shown.
