Sixth Portion

ששי

On Shabbat HaChodesh that is also Rosh Chodesh Nisan, the Sixth Portion runs to the end of the parsha (13:59), and the seventh aliyah is read from a second scroll: Numbers 28:9–15.

13:40And the man whose hair is fallen off his head, he is bald; yet he is clean.

Maftir

The Maftir repeats the last verses of the Seventh Portion. Tazria is read on its own only in a leap year; in other years Tazria and Metzora are read together on one Shabbat, the reading runs from Leviticus 12:1 to 15:33, and the Maftir and haftarah of Metzora are read. On Shabbat HaChodesh a second Torah scroll is taken out for a special Maftir.

13:57And if it appears still in the garment, either in the warp, or in the woof, or in anything of skin, it is a spreading plague; you shall burn that in which the plague is with fire.

Haftarah · 2 Kings 4:42–5:19

Haftarah

Tazria gives the priests the law of tzara’at, the “leprosy” that makes a person unclean and shuts him out of the camp (13:46). In the haftarah Naaman, the Aramean general who is a leper, dips seven times in the Yarden at the word of Elisha and is clean, “and his flesh came again like unto the flesh of a little child” (5:14); he confesses that “there is no God in all the earth, but in Yisrael” (5:15). The reading opens with Elisha feeding a hundred men from twenty loaves (4:42–44). Ashkenazi and Sephardic communities read the same verses. On Shabbat HaChodesh the special haftarah is read instead; when Tazria and Metzora are read together, the haftarah of Metzora (2 Kings 7:3–20) is read.

4:42And there came a man from Ba’al Shalishah (Baal-shalisha), and brought the man of God bread of the firstfruits, twenty loaves of barley, and full ears of grain in its husk. And he said, “Give unto the people, that they may eat.”

Maftir: Shabbat HaChodesh

Shabbat HaChodesh is the Shabbat on or before Rosh Chodesh Nisan. When Tazria is read on its own (in a leap year) it is often Shabbat HaChodesh: either the Shabbat before Rosh Chodesh (27 or 29 Adar II) or Rosh Chodesh Nisan itself, when three Torah scrolls are read: six aliyot from Tazria, the seventh from Numbers 28:9–15, and then this Maftir: “This month shall be unto you the beginning of months” (12:2), and the laws of the Pesach offering.

12:1And Hashem spoke unto Moshe and Aharon in the land of Mitzrayim, saying,

Vayomer Adonai el-Mosheh ve'el-Aharon be'eretz Mitzrayim lemor.

Haftarah: Shabbat HaChodesh

Read on Shabbat HaChodesh instead of 2 Kings 4–5. On the first day of the first month the sanctuary is cleansed (45:18), and on the fourteenth day “you shall have the Pesach” (45:21). Communities begin and end this haftarah at different verses, as marked below. When Shabbat HaChodesh is Rosh Chodesh Nisan, many communities add the first and last verses of the Rosh Chodesh haftarah (Isaiah 66:1 and 66:23).

45:16“All the people of the land shall give this offering for the prince in Yisrael.

45:17And it shall be the prince’s part to give burnt offerings, and meal offerings, and drink offerings, in the feasts, and in the new moons, and on the Shabbatot, in all the appointed feasts of the house of Yisrael; he shall prepare the sin offering, and the meal offering, and the burnt offering, and the peace offerings, to make atonement for the house of Yisrael.”

Chabad and Sephardic communities begin here: Ezekiel 45:18

45:18Thus says the Lord Hashem: “In the first month, on the first day of the month, you shall take a young bullock without blemish, and cleanse the sanctuary;

Koh-amar Adonai Elohim barishon be'eḥad laḥodesh tikaḥ par-ben-bakar tamim veḥiteta et-hamikdash.

45:19and the priest shall take of the blood of the sin offering, and put it upon the doorposts of the house, and upon the four corners of the ledge of the altar, and upon the posts of the gate of the inner court.

Velakaḥ hakohen midam haḥatat venatan el-mezuzat habayit ve'el-arba pinot ha'azarah lamizbeaḥ ve'al-mezuzat sha'ar heḥatzer hapenimit.

Rosh Chodesh Haftarah · Isaiah 66:1–24, 23

Haftarah: Shabbat Rosh Chodesh

On Rosh Chodesh Nisan the HaChodesh haftarah is read, and many communities add only the first and last verses of this one (66:1 and 66:23); it is given here for reference. In other years, after the last verse, verse 23 is read again, so that the haftarah ends with “from one new moon to another, and from one Shabbat to another, shall all flesh come to worship before Me” (66:23).

66:1Thus says Hashem: The heaven is My throne, and the earth is My footstool; where is the house that you build unto Me? And where is the place of My rest?

Koh amar Adonai hashamayim kis'i veha'aretz hadom raglay ei-zeh vayit asher tivnu-li ve'ei-zeh makom menuḥati.

66:2For all those things My hand has made, and so all those things came to be, says Hashem; but to this man will I look, even to him that is poor and of a contrite spirit, and trembles at My word.

Sources & method

Hebrew text
The Masoretic text with vowels (nikkud) and cantillation marks (ta’amim), as published on Chabad.org. Every verse was checked character by character against Chabad’s Tanakh. Where the written text (ketiv) differs from the reading (qere), the reading is shown and the written form follows in small type.
English translation
The King James Version (public domain), lightly modernized by Benei Avraham: “thee/thou/ye” become “you,” older verb forms are updated (“hath” to “has,” “begat” to “begot”), and archaic words are replaced only where the meaning would otherwise be unclear. People and places carry their Hebrew names, with the familiar English name in parentheses the first time (e.g., Moshe (Moses)). The Divine Name (יהוה, “the LORD” in the KJV) is written “Hashem”; “God” (Elohim) is unchanged. Verse numbers follow the Hebrew Bible.
Transliteration
Produced from the Hebrew with the open-source hebrew-transliteration library, adapted to Sephardic/Israeli pronunciation and reviewed by hand: ḥ for Chet and Chaf, tz for Tzadi, k for Kuf, and the Divine Name read “Adonai.” Names are capitalized.
Aliyot & haftarot
Portion divisions and haftarah readings follow the standard Jewish calendar outside Israel, cross-checked with Chabad.org and Hebcal. Ashkenazi and Sephardic haftarah customs are both shown.
