Haftarah · Jeremiah 34:8–22; 33:25–26

Haftarah

The parsha opens with the law of the Hebrew servant who goes free in the seventh year (Exodus 21:2). In the haftarah, King Tzidkiyahu and the people proclaim liberty to their Hebrew servants and then take them back, and Yirmeyahu quotes that law: “At the end of seven years let go every man his brother a Hebrew” (34:14). The haftarah skips back to 33:25–26 so that it ends with comfort: “I will cause their captivity to return, and have mercy on them.”

34:8This is the word that came unto Yirmeyahu (Jeremiah) from Hashem, after king Tzidkiyahu (Zedekiah) had made a covenant with all the people who were at Yerushalayim (Jerusalem), to proclaim liberty unto them;

Hadavar asher-hayah el-Yirmeyahu me'et Adonai aḥarei kerot hameleḥ Tzidkiyahu berit et-kol-ha'am asher biRushalayim likro lahem deror.

34:9that every man should let his manservant, and every man his maidservant, being a Hebrew man or a Hebrew woman, go free; that none should serve himself of them, namely, of a Jew his brother.

Leshalaḥ ish et-avdo ve'ish et-shifḥato ha'ivri veha'ivriyah ḥofshim levilti avad-bam bihudi aḥihu ish.

34:10Now when all the princes, and all the people, who had entered into the covenant, heard that every one should let his manservant, and every one his maidservant, go free, that none should serve themselves of them any more, then they obeyed, and let them go.

Vayishme'u ḥol-hasarim veḥol-ha'am asher-ba'u vaberit leshalaḥ ish et-avdo ve'ish et-shifḥato ḥofshim levilti avad-bam od vayishme'u vayeshaleḥu.

34:11But afterward they turned, and caused the servants and the handmaids, whom they had let go free, to return, and brought them into subjection for servants and for handmaids.

Maftir: Shabbat Shekalim

Shabbat Shekalim is the Shabbat before Rosh Chodesh Adar (in a leap year, Adar II), or Rosh Chodesh itself when it falls on Shabbat. When that Shabbat is Mishpatim, a second Torah scroll is taken out for this Maftir, the half-shekel that every man gave for the service of the tent of meeting. When Shabbat Shekalim is also Rosh Chodesh, three scrolls are read: six aliyot from Mishpatim, the seventh from Numbers 28:9–15, and then this Maftir.

Shekalim Haftarah · 2 Kings 11:17–12:17

Haftarah: Shabbat Shekalim

Read on Shabbat Shekalim instead of Jeremiah. Chabad and Sephardic communities begin at 2 Kings 11:17; other Ashkenazi communities begin at 12:1. King Yehoash has the holy money that the people bring collected to repair the house of Hashem (12:5–6), as the half-shekel was given for the service of the tent of meeting (Exodus 30:16).

11:17And Yehoyada (Jehoiada) made a covenant between Hashem and the king and the people, that they should be Hashem’s people; between the king also and the people.

11:18And all the people of the land went into the house of Baal, and broke it down; his altars and his images they broke in pieces thoroughly, and slew Matan (Mattan) the priest of Baal before the altars. And the priest appointed officers over the house of Hashem.

11:19And he took the rulers over hundreds, and the captains, and the guard, and all the people of the land; and they brought down the king from the house of Hashem, and came by the way of the gate of the guard to the king’s house. And he sat on the throne of the kings.

11:20And all the people of the land rejoiced, and the city was quiet; and they slew Atalyahu (Athaliah) with the sword beside the king’s house.

12:1Yehoash (Jehoash) was seven years old when he began to reign.

12:3And Yehoash did that which was right in the sight of Hashem all his days in which Yehoyada the priest instructed him.

When Shabbat Mishpatim is Rosh Chodesh Adar I (in a leap year), the seven portions of Mishpatim are read from the first Torah scroll, and this Maftir for Shabbat and Rosh Chodesh is read from a second scroll in place of Exodus 24:16–18.

Rosh Chodesh Haftarah · Isaiah 66:1–24, 23

Haftarah: Shabbat Rosh Chodesh

Read instead of Jeremiah when Shabbat Mishpatim is Rosh Chodesh (and not Shabbat Shekalim). After the last verse, verse 23 is read again, so that the haftarah ends with “from one new moon to another, and from one Shabbat to another, shall all flesh come to worship before Me” (66:23).

66:1Thus says Hashem: The heaven is My throne, and the earth is My footstool; where is the house that you build unto Me? And where is the place of My rest?

Koh amar Adonai hashamayim kis'i veha'aretz hadom raglay ei-zeh vayit asher tivnu-li ve'ei-zeh makom menuḥati.

66:2For all those things My hand has made, and so all those things came to be, says Hashem; but to this man will I look, even to him that is poor and of a contrite spirit, and trembles at My word.

66:3He that kills an ox is as if he slew a man; he that sacrifices a lamb, as if he broke a dog’s neck; he that offers an offering, as if he offered swine’s blood; he that burns incense, as if he blessed an idol. Yes, they have chosen their own ways, and their soul delights in their abominations.

Haftarah on Erev Rosh Chodesh · 1 Samuel 20:18–42

Haftarah: Machar Chodesh

Machar Chodesh (“Tomorrow is the new moon”) replaces the regular haftarah when Shabbat Mishpatim falls on 29 Shevat in a leap year, the day before Rosh Chodesh Adar I.

20:18Then Yehonatan (Jonathan) said to David, “Tomorrow is the new moon (Rosh Chodesh); and you will be missed, because your seat will be empty.

Vayomer-lo Yehonatan maḥar ḥodesh venifkadta ki yipaked moshaveḥa.

20:19And when you have stayed three days, then you shall go down quickly, and come to the place where you hid yourself when the matter was in hand, and shall remain by the stone Ezel.

Veshilashta tered me'od uvata el-hamakom asher-nistarta sham beyom hama'aseh veyashavta etzel ha'even ha'azel.

20:20And I will shoot three arrows on its side, as though I shot at a mark.

Va'ani sheloshet haḥitzim tzidah oreh leshalaḥ-li lematarah.

20:21And, behold, I will send a lad, saying, ‘Go, find the arrows.’ If I expressly say unto the lad, ‘Behold, the arrows are on this side of you, take them,’ then come; for there is peace to you, and no harm, as Hashem lives.

20:22But if I say thus unto the young man, ‘Behold, the arrows are beyond you,’ go your way; for Hashem has sent you away.

20:24So David hid himself in the field; and when the new moon had come, the king sat down to eat food.

20:25And the king sat upon his seat, as at other times, upon the seat by the wall; and Yehonatan arose, and Avner (Abner) sat by Shaul’s (Saul’s) side, and David’s place was empty.

20:26Nevertheless Shaul did not speak anything that day; for he thought, “Something has happened to him; he is not clean; surely he is not clean.”

20:27And it came to pass on the next day, which was the second day of the month, that David’s place was empty; and Shaul said unto Yehonatan his son, “Why has the son of Yishai (Jesse) not come to the meal, neither yesterday nor today?”

20:28And Yehonatan answered Shaul, “David earnestly asked leave of me to go to Beit Lechem (Bethlehem).

Vaya'an Yehonatan et-Sha'ul nish'ol nish'al David me'imadi ad-Beit Laḥem.

20:29And he said, ‘Let me go, I pray you; for our family has a sacrifice in the city, and my brother has commanded me to be there; and now, if I have found favor in your eyes, let me get away, I pray you, and see my brothers.’ Therefore he has not come unto the king’s table.”

20:30Then Shaul’s anger was kindled against Yehonatan, and he said unto him, “You son of the perverse, rebellious woman! Do I not know that you have chosen the son of Yishai to your own shame, and unto the shame of your mother’s nakedness?

20:32And Yehonatan answered Shaul his father, and said unto him, “Why should he be put to death? What has he done?”

20:33And Shaul cast a spear at him to strike him; by which Yehonatan knew that it was determined by his father to put David to death.

Vayatel Sha'ul et-haḥanit alav lehakoto vayeda Yehonatan ki-ḥalah hi me'im aviv lehamit et-David.

20:34So Yehonatan arose from the table in fierce anger, and ate no food the second day of the month; for he was grieved for David, because his father had put him to shame.

20:37And when the lad had come to the place of the arrow which Yehonatan had shot, Yehonatan cried after the lad, and said, “Is not the arrow beyond you?”

20:41And as soon as the lad was gone, David arose out of a place toward the south, and fell on his face to the ground, and bowed himself three times; and they kissed one another, and wept one with another, until David exceeded.

Sources & method

Hebrew text
The Masoretic text with vowels (nikkud) and cantillation marks (ta’amim), as published on Chabad.org. Every verse was checked character by character against Chabad’s Tanakh. Where the written text (ketiv) differs from the reading (qere), the reading is shown and the written form follows in small type.
English translation
The King James Version (public domain), lightly modernized by Benei Avraham: “thee/thou/ye” become “you,” older verb forms are updated (“hath” to “has,” “begat” to “begot”), and archaic words are replaced only where the meaning would otherwise be unclear. People and places carry their Hebrew names, with the familiar English name in parentheses the first time (e.g., Moshe (Moses)). The Divine Name (יהוה, “the LORD” in the KJV) is written “Hashem”; “God” (Elohim) is unchanged. Verse numbers follow the Hebrew Bible.
Transliteration
Produced from the Hebrew with the open-source hebrew-transliteration library, adapted to Sephardic/Israeli pronunciation and reviewed by hand: ḥ for Chet and Chaf, tz for Tzadi, k for Kuf, and the Divine Name read “Adonai.” Names are capitalized.
Aliyot & haftarot
Portion divisions and haftarah readings follow the standard Jewish calendar outside Israel, cross-checked with Chabad.org and Hebcal. Ashkenazi and Sephardic haftarah customs are both shown.
