Haftarah · 1 Kings 5:26–6:13

Haftarah

הפטרה

Hashem tells Moshe, “let them make Me a sanctuary; that I may dwell among them” (Exodus 25:8). In the haftarah King Shlomo builds the house of Hashem, with stones that were made ready before they were brought, so that no tool of iron was heard in the house (6:7), and Hashem promises, “I will dwell among the children of Yisrael” (6:13).

5:26And Hashem gave Shlomo (Solomon) wisdom, as He promised him; and there was peace between Chiram (Hiram) and Shlomo; and the two of them made a covenant together.

Maftir: Shabbat Shekalim

מפטיר שקלים

When Shabbat Terumah is Rosh Chodesh Adar, it is both Shabbat Shekalim and Rosh Chodesh. Three Torah scrolls are read: six aliyot from Terumah, the seventh from Numbers 28:9–15, and then this Maftir, the half-shekel that every man gave for the service of the tent of meeting.

30:11And Hashem spoke unto Moshe, saying,

Read on Shabbat Shekalim instead of 1 Kings 5. Chabad and Sephardic communities begin at 2 Kings 11:17; other Ashkenazi communities begin at 12:1. King Yehoash has the holy money that the people bring collected to repair the house of Hashem (12:5–6).

11:17And Yehoyada (Jehoiada) made a covenant between Hashem and the king and the people, that they should be Hashem’s people; between the king also and the people.

11:18And all the people of the land went into the house of Baal, and broke it down; his altars and his images they broke in pieces thoroughly, and slew Matan (Mattan) the priest of Baal before the altars. And the priest appointed officers over the house of Hashem.

Maftir for Shabbat Zachor · Deuteronomy 25:17–19

Maftir: Shabbat Zachor

מפטיר זכור

Shabbat Zachor is the Shabbat before Purim. When that Shabbat is Terumah, a second Torah scroll is taken out for this Maftir: the command to remember what Amalek did to Yisrael on the way out of Mitzrayim. Many read the word for “remembrance” in verse 19 twice, as zecher and as zeicher.

25:17Remember what Amalek did unto you by the way, when you came forth out of Mitzrayim;

Zaḥor et asher-asah leḥa Amalek badereḥ betzeteḥem miMitzrayim.

25:19Therefore it shall be, when Hashem your God has given you rest from all your enemies round about, in the land which Hashem your God gives you for an inheritance to possess it, that you shall blot out the remembrance of Amalek from under heaven; you shall not forget it.

Zachor Haftarah · 1 Samuel 15:1–34

Haftarah: Shabbat Zachor

הפטרת זכור

Read on Shabbat Zachor instead of 1 Kings 5. Ashkenazi communities, Chabad among them, begin at 1 Samuel 15:2; Sephardic communities begin at 15:1. Shmuel tells Sha’ul to destroy Amalek, but Sha’ul spares Agag the king of Amalek (15:8–9). Haman, the enemy of the Jews in the Purim story, is called “the Agagite” (Esther 3:1).

15:1And Shmuel (Samuel) said unto Sha’ul (Saul), “Hashem sent me to anoint you to be king over His people, over Yisrael; now therefore hearken unto the voice of the words of Hashem.

Vayomer Shemu'el el-Sha'ul oti shalaḥ Adonai limshaḥaḥa lemeleḥ al-amo al-Yisra'el ve'atah shema lekol divrei Adonai.

Ashkenazi communities, Chabad among them, begin here: 1 Samuel 15:2–34

15:2Thus says Hashem of hosts: I remember that which Amalek did to Yisrael, how he laid wait for him in the way, when he came up from Mitzrayim.

Koh amar Adonai tzeva'ot pakadti et asher-asah Amalek leYisra'el asher-sam lo badereḥ ba'aloto miMitzrayim.

15:4And Sha’ul gathered the people together, and numbered them in Tela’im (Telaim), two hundred thousand footmen, and ten thousand men of Yehudah (Judah).

Maftir: Shabbat Rosh Chodesh

מפטיר ראש חודש

When Shabbat Terumah is Rosh Chodesh Adar I (in a leap year), the seven portions of Terumah are read from the first Torah scroll, and this Maftir for Shabbat and Rosh Chodesh is read from a second scroll in place of Exodus 27:17–19. When Shabbat Terumah is Rosh Chodesh Adar, these verses are the seventh aliyah and the Shekalim Maftir follows.

Rosh Chodesh Haftarah · Isaiah 66:1–24, 23

Haftarah: Shabbat Rosh Chodesh

הפטרת ראש חודש

Read instead of 1 Kings 5 when Shabbat Terumah is Rosh Chodesh Adar I. (On Rosh Chodesh Adar the Shekalim haftarah is read.) After the last verse, verse 23 is read again, so that the haftarah ends with “from one new moon to another, and from one Shabbat to another, shall all flesh come to worship before Me” (66:23).

66:1Thus says Hashem: The heaven is My throne, and the earth is My footstool; where is the house that you build unto Me? And where is the place of My rest?

Koh amar Adonai hashamayim kis'i veha'aretz hadom raglay ei-zeh vayit asher tivnu-li ve'ei-zeh makom menuḥati.

66:2For all those things My hand has made, and so all those things came to be, says Hashem; but to this man will I look, even to him that is poor and of a contrite spirit, and trembles at My word.

Sources & method

Hebrew text
The Masoretic text with vowels (nikkud) and cantillation marks (ta’amim), as published on Chabad.org. Every verse was checked character by character against Chabad’s Tanakh. Where the written text (ketiv) differs from the reading (qere), the reading is shown and the written form follows in small type.
English translation
The King James Version (public domain), lightly modernized by Benei Avraham: “thee/thou/ye” become “you,” older verb forms are updated (“hath” to “has,” “begat” to “begot”), and archaic words are replaced only where the meaning would otherwise be unclear. People and places carry their Hebrew names, with the familiar English name in parentheses the first time (e.g., Moshe (Moses)). The Divine Name (יהוה, “the LORD” in the KJV) is written “Hashem”; “God” (Elohim) is unchanged. Verse numbers follow the Hebrew Bible.
Transliteration
Produced from the Hebrew with the open-source hebrew-transliteration library, adapted to Sephardic/Israeli pronunciation and reviewed by hand: ḥ for Chet and Chaf, tz for Tzadi, k for Kuf, and the Divine Name read “Adonai.” Names are capitalized.
Aliyot & haftarot
Portion divisions and haftarah readings follow the standard Jewish calendar outside Israel, cross-checked with Chabad.org and Hebcal. Ashkenazi and Sephardic haftarah customs are both shown.
