First Portion

At Shabbat Minchah on Shabbat Chayei Sarah, and on Monday and Thursday mornings, this first portion of Toldot is read in three aliyot: 25:19–22, 25:23–26 and 25:27–26:5.

25:19And these are the generations of Yitzchak (Isaac), Avraham’s (Abraham’s) son: Avraham begot Yitzchak.

Ve'eleh toledot Yitzḥak ben-Avraham Avraham holid et-Yitzḥak.

25:20And Yitzchak was forty years old when he took Rivkah (Rebekah) to wife, the daughter of Betu’el (Bethuel) the Arami (Syrian) of Paddan-Aram (Padan-aram), the sister of Lavan (Laban) the Arami.

25:21And Yitzchak entreated Hashem for his wife, because she was barren; and Hashem was entreated of him, and Rivkah his wife conceived.

Vaye'tar Yitzḥak la-Adonai lenoḥaḥ ishto ki akarah hi vaye'ater lo Adonai vatahar Rivkah ishto.

25:22And the children struggled together within her; and she said, “If it be so, why am I thus?” And she went to inquire of Hashem.

Vayitrotzatzu habanim bekirbah vatomer im-ken lamah zeh anoḥi vateleḥ lidrosh et-Adonai.

25:23And Hashem said unto her, “Two nations are in your womb, and two manner of people shall be separated from your bowels; and the one people shall be stronger than the other people; and the elder shall serve the younger.”

Vayomer Adonai lah shenei goyim bevitneḥ ushenei le'umim mime'ayiḥ yiparedu ule'om mil'om ye'ematz verav ya'avod tza'ir.

25:24And when her days to be delivered were fulfilled, behold, there were twins in her womb.

Vayimle'u yameha laledet vehineh tomim bevitnah.

25:25And the first came out red, all over like a hairy garment; and they called his name Esav (Esau).

Vayetze harishon admoni kulo ke'aderet se'ar vayikre'u shemo Esav.

25:26And after that came his brother out, and his hand took hold on Esav’s heel; and his name was called Yaakov (Jacob). And Yitzchak was sixty years old when she bore them.

Ve'aḥarei-ḥen yatza aḥiv veyado oḥezet ba'akev Esav vayikra shemo Ya'akov veYitzḥak ben-shishim shanah beledet otam.

25:27And the boys grew; and Esav was a skillful hunter, a man of the field; and Yaakov was a plain man, dwelling in tents.

Vayigdelu hane'arim vayehi Esav ish yodea tzayid ish sadeh veYa'akov ish tam yoshev ohalim.

25:28And Yitzchak loved Esav, because he ate of his game; but Rivkah loved Yaakov.

Vaye'ehav Yitzḥak et-Esav ki-tzayid befiv veRivkah ohevet et-Ya'akov.

25:29And Yaakov cooked stew; and Esav came from the field, and he was faint.

Vayazed Ya'akov nazid vayavo Esav min-hasadeh vehu ayef.

25:30And Esav said to Yaakov, “Feed me, I pray you, with that same red stew; for I am faint.” Therefore was his name called Edom.

25:31And Yaakov said, “Sell me this day your birthright.”

Vayomer Ya'akov miḥrah ḥayom et-beḥorateḥa li.

25:32And Esav said, “Behold, I am at the point to die; and what profit shall this birthright do to me?”

Vayomer Esav hineh anoḥi holeḥ lamut velamah-zeh li beḥorah.

25:33And Yaakov said, “Swear to me this day”; and he swore unto him; and he sold his birthright unto Yaakov.

Vayomer Ya'akov hishave'ah li kayom vayishava lo vayimkor et-beḥorato leYa'akov.

25:34Then Yaakov gave Esav bread and stew of lentils; and he ate and drank, and rose up, and went his way. Thus Esav despised his birthright.

Haftarah · Malachi 1:1–2:7

Haftarah

Ashkenazi and Sephardic communities read the same haftarah. The parsha tells of the twins Yaakov and Esav, of whom Hashem said, “the elder shall serve the younger” (Genesis 25:23); the haftarah opens with Hashem’s word through Malachi, “Was not Esav Yaakov’s brother? … Yet I loved Yaakov, and I hated Esav” (1:2–3). When Shabbat Toldot falls on 29 Cheshvan, the day before Rosh Chodesh Kislev, Machar Chodesh is read instead.

Haftarah on Erev Rosh Chodesh · 1 Samuel 20:18–42

Haftarah: Machar Chodesh

Machar Chodesh (“Tomorrow is the new moon”) replaces the regular haftarah when Shabbat Toldot falls on 29 Cheshvan, the day before Rosh Chodesh Kislev. Shabbat Toldot never falls on Rosh Chodesh itself.

20:18Then Yehonatan (Jonathan) said to David, “Tomorrow is the new moon (Rosh Chodesh); and you will be missed, because your seat will be empty.

Vayomer-lo Yehonatan maḥar ḥodesh venifkadta ki yipaked moshaveḥa.

Sources & method

Hebrew text
The Masoretic text with vowels (nikkud) and cantillation marks (ta’amim), as published on Chabad.org. Every verse was checked character by character against Chabad’s Tanakh. Where the written text (ketiv) differs from the reading (qere), the reading is shown and the written form follows in small type.
English translation
The King James Version (public domain), lightly modernized by Benei Avraham: “thee/thou/ye” become “you,” older verb forms are updated (“hath” to “has,” “begat” to “begot”), and archaic words are replaced only where the meaning would otherwise be unclear. People and places carry their Hebrew names, with the familiar English name in parentheses the first time (e.g., Yaakov (Jacob)). The Divine Name (יהוה, “the LORD” in the KJV) is written “Hashem”; “God” (Elohim) is unchanged. Verse numbers follow the Hebrew Bible.
Transliteration
Produced from the Hebrew with the open-source hebrew-transliteration library, adapted to Sephardic/Israeli pronunciation and reviewed by hand: ḥ for Chet and Chaf, tz for Tzadi, k for Kuf, and the Divine Name read “Adonai.” Names are capitalized.
Aliyot & haftarot
Portion divisions and haftarah readings follow the standard Jewish calendar outside Israel, cross-checked with Chabad.org and Hebcal. Ashkenazi and Sephardic haftarah customs are both shown.
