Haftarah · 1 Kings 1:1–31

Haftarah

הפטרה

Ashkenazi and Sephardic communities read the same haftarah. Like Avraham, who was “old, advanced in age” (Genesis 24:1) and made sure of the future of Yitzchak, King David in his old age (1:1) makes sure that Shlomo will reign after him (1:30).

1:1Now King David was old, advanced in years; and they covered him with garments, but he could not get warm.

Vehameleḥ David zaken ba bayamim vayeḥasuhu babegadim velo yiḥam lo.

אוְהַמֶּ֚לֶךְ דָּוִד֙ זָקֵ֔ן בָּ֖א בַּיָּמִ֑ים וַיְכַסֻּ֙הוּ֙ בַּבְּגָדִ֔ים וְלֹ֥א יִחַ֖ם לֽוֹ׃

1:2Therefore his servants said unto him, “Let there be sought for my lord the king a young virgin; and let her stand before the king, and let her be his attendant, and let her lie in your bosom, that my lord the king may get warm.”

Vayomeru lo avadav yevakshu ladoni hameleḥ na'arah vetulah ve'amedah lifnei hameleḥ utehi-lo soḥenet veshaḥevah veḥeikeḥa veḥam ladoni hameleḥ.

1:3So they sought for a beautiful young woman throughout all the borders of Yisrael (Israel), and found Avishag (Abishag) the Shunamit (Shunammite), and brought her to the king.

Sources & method

Hebrew text
The Masoretic text with vowels (nikkud) and cantillation marks (ta’amim), as published on Chabad.org. Every verse was checked character by character against Chabad’s Tanakh. Where the written text (ketiv) differs from the reading (qere), the reading is shown and the written form follows in small type.
English translation
The King James Version (public domain), lightly modernized by Benei Avraham: “thee/thou/ye” become “you,” older verb forms are updated (“hath” to “has,” “begat” to “begot”), and archaic words are replaced only where the meaning would otherwise be unclear. People and places carry their Hebrew names, with the familiar English name in parentheses the first time (e.g., Avraham (Abraham)). The Divine Name (יהוה, “the LORD” in the KJV) is written “Hashem”; “God” (Elohim) is unchanged. Verse numbers follow the Hebrew Bible.
Transliteration
Produced from the Hebrew with the open-source hebrew-transliteration library, adapted to Sephardic/Israeli pronunciation and reviewed by hand: ḥ for Chet and Chaf, tz for Tzadi, k for Kuf, and the Divine Name read “Adonai.” Names are capitalized.
Aliyot & haftarot
Portion divisions and haftarah readings follow the standard Jewish calendar outside Israel, cross-checked with Chabad.org and Hebcal. Ashkenazi and Sephardic haftarah customs are both shown.
