ראשון

At Shabbat Minchah on Shabbat Vayishlach, and on Monday and Thursday mornings, this first portion of Vayeshev is read in three aliyot: 37:1–3, 37:4–7 and 37:8–11.

37:1And Yaakov (Jacob) dwelt in the land where his father had sojourned, in the land of Kena’an (Canaan).

Vayeshev Ya'akov be'eretz megurei aviv be'eretz Kena'an.

37:2These are the generations of Yaakov. Yosef (Joseph), being seventeen years old, was feeding the flock with his brothers; and the lad was with the sons of Bilhah, and with the sons of Zilpah, his father’s wives; and Yosef brought unto his father an evil report of them.

Eleh toledot Ya'akov Yosef ben-sheva-esreh shanah hayah ro'eh et-eḥav batzon vehu na'ar et-benei Vilhah ve'et-benei Zilpah neshei aviv vayave Yosef et-dibatam ra'ah el-avihem.

37:3Now Yisrael (Israel) loved Yosef more than all his children, because he was the son of his old age; and he made him a coat of many colors.

40:1And it came to pass after these things, that the butler of the king of Mitzrayim and his baker offended their lord the king of Mitzrayim.

Haftarah · Amos 2:6–3:8

Haftarah

הפטרה

Ashkenazi and Sephardic communities read the same haftarah. Amos speaks against those who “sold the righteous for silver” (2:6), recalling how the brothers sold Yosef “for twenty pieces of silver” (Genesis 37:28). When Shabbat Vayeshev falls during Chanukah, the haftarah for Shabbat Chanukah is read instead.

2:6Thus says Hashem: “For three transgressions of Yisrael (Israel), and for four, I will not turn away its punishment; because they sold the righteous for silver, and the poor for a pair of shoes;

Koh amar Adonai al-sheloshah pish'ei Yisra'el ve'al-arba'ah lo ashivenu al-miḥram bakesef tzadik ve'evyon ba'avur na'alayim.

Maftir: Shabbat Chanukah

מפטיר לשבת חנוכה

Shabbat Vayeshev falls during Chanukah in about one year in four. Then a second Torah scroll is read for the Maftir: on the first day of Chanukah (25 Kislev) Numbers 7:1–17, and on the second day (26 Kislev) Numbers 7:18–23. These verses tell of the dedication (chanukat hamizbe’ach) of the altar in the wilderness.

7:1And it came to pass on the day that Moshe (Moses) had finished setting up the Mishkan (tabernacle), and had anointed it, and sanctified it, and all its vessels, and the altar and all its vessels, and had anointed them, and sanctified them,

Haftarah on Shabbat Chanukah · Zechariah 2:14–4:7

Haftarah: Shabbat Chanukah

הפטרת שבת חנוכה

Read instead of the regular haftarah when Shabbat falls during Chanukah. Zechariah sees a menorah all of gold (4:2) and hears the word to Zerubbavel: “Not by might, nor by power, but by My spirit” (4:6).

2:14“Sing and rejoice, O daughter of Tziyon (Zion); for, lo, I come, and I will dwell in your midst,” says Hashem.

Rani vesimḥi bat-Tziyon ki hineni-va veshaḥanti vetoḥeḥ ne'um-Adonai.

2:15“And many nations shall join themselves to Hashem in that day, and shall be My people; and I will dwell in your midst, and you shall know that Hashem of hosts has sent me unto you.

Venilvu goyim rabim el-Adonai bayom hahu vehayu li le'am veshaḥanti vetoḥeḥ veyada'at ki-Adonai tzeva'ot shelaḥani elayiḥ.

2:16And Hashem shall inherit Yehudah (Judah) as His portion in the holy land, and shall choose Yerushalayim (Jerusalem) again.

Sources & method

Hebrew text
The Masoretic text with vowels (nikkud) and cantillation marks (ta’amim), as published on Chabad.org. Every verse was checked character by character against Chabad’s Tanakh. Where the written text (ketiv) differs from the reading (qere), the reading is shown and the written form follows in small type.
English translation
The King James Version (public domain), lightly modernized by Benei Avraham: “thee/thou/ye” become “you,” older verb forms are updated (“hath” to “has,” “begat” to “begot”), and archaic words are replaced only where the meaning would otherwise be unclear. People and places carry their Hebrew names, with the familiar English name in parentheses the first time (e.g., Yosef (Joseph)). The Divine Name (יהוה, “the LORD” in the KJV) is written “Hashem”; “God” (Elohim) is unchanged. Verse numbers follow the Hebrew Bible.
Transliteration
Produced from the Hebrew with the open-source hebrew-transliteration library, adapted to Sephardic/Israeli pronunciation and reviewed by hand: ḥ for Chet and Chaf, tz for Tzadi, k for Kuf, and the Divine Name read “Adonai.” Names are capitalized.
Aliyot & haftarot
Portion divisions and haftarah readings follow the standard Jewish calendar outside Israel, cross-checked with Chabad.org and Hebcal. Ashkenazi and Sephardic haftarah customs are both shown.
