At Shabbat Minchah on Shabbat Vayetze, and on Monday and Thursday mornings, this first portion of Vayishlach is read in three aliyot: 32:4–6, 32:7–9 and 32:10–13.

32:4And Yaakov (Jacob) sent messengers before him to Esav (Esau) his brother unto the land of Se’ir (Seir), the country of Edom.

32:5And he commanded them, saying, “Thus shall you speak unto my lord Esav: ‘Your servant Yaakov says thus: I have sojourned with Lavan (Laban), and stayed there until now;

32:14And he lodged there that same night; and took of that which came to his hand a present for Esav his brother:

32:20And so he commanded the second, and the third, and all that followed the droves, saying, “In this manner shall you speak unto Esav, when you find him.

Haftarah · Obadiah 1:1–21

Haftarah

הפטרה

Ashkenazi and Sephardic communities read the same haftarah, the whole book of Ovadyah (Obadiah). Some Ashkenazi communities read Hosea 11:7–12:12 instead, which is on the Vayetze page. The parsha tells of Esav, “who is Edom” (Genesis 36:1), and the meeting of the two brothers (33:4); Ovadyah speaks against Edom “for your violence against your brother Yaakov” (1:10) and ends, “the kingdom shall be Hashem’s” (1:21).

1:1The vision of Ovadyah (Obadiah). Thus says the Lord Hashem concerning Edom: We have heard a report from Hashem, and an envoy is sent among the nations: “Arise, and let us rise up against her in battle.”

Sources & method

Hebrew text
The Masoretic text with vowels (nikkud) and cantillation marks (ta’amim), as published on Chabad.org. Every verse was checked character by character against Chabad’s Tanakh. Where the written text (ketiv) differs from the reading (qere), the reading is shown and the written form follows in small type.
English translation
The King James Version (public domain), lightly modernized by Benei Avraham: “thee/thou/ye” become “you,” older verb forms are updated (“hath” to “has,” “begat” to “begot”), and archaic words are replaced only where the meaning would otherwise be unclear. People and places carry their Hebrew names, with the familiar English name in parentheses the first time (e.g., Yaakov (Jacob)). The Divine Name (יהוה, “the LORD” in the KJV) is written “Hashem”; “God” (Elohim) is unchanged. Verse numbers follow the Hebrew Bible.
Transliteration
Produced from the Hebrew with the open-source hebrew-transliteration library, adapted to Sephardic/Israeli pronunciation and reviewed by hand: ḥ for Chet and Chaf, tz for Tzadi, k for Kuf, and the Divine Name read “Adonai.” Names are capitalized.
Aliyot & haftarot
Portion divisions and haftarah readings follow the standard Jewish calendar outside Israel, cross-checked with Chabad.org and Hebcal. Ashkenazi and Sephardic haftarah customs are both shown.
